In my view, metal—including aluminum—embodies humanity, as both an achievement of progress and its driving force. It is difficult to imagine modern civilization without metal: it is both a tool of labor and a weapon, a hoe and a spear. The foil-covered frames of dried boxwood trees serve as a symbol of human impact on nature. The warning tape marks the boundaries of the grove. Signal lights, used by road workers as a tool to indicate the limits of repair work, appear here in a similar role. Thus, we see a boundary beyond which nature is “repairing” the consequences of human intervention, cultivating new shoots through self-seeding.
